My Skills

  • Beat Reporting
    I have had the opportunity to be the health beat reporter as well as the entertainment beat reporter for News Central 34 throughout my time at Central Michigan University. Not only that, but I have gained the assets to fully take on the responsibility of a reporter and get the job completed thoroughly and efficiently. I understand the meaning of a deadline and work very well under pressure. I have a keen sense of news story topics that an audience will appeal to when given a certain reporter beat. I understand the importance of a beat reporter in terms of a newscast and work my hardest on a consistent basis.
     

  • Anchoring
    Being an anchor is not an easy task to accomplish and I truly believe I have what it takes to handle the pressure of sitting at a news desk. I have had limited opportunities to anchor at Central Michigan University, however, I do understand what is involved in being the individual that carries a newscast. I am an excellent news writer as well as quick and efficient, professional when I enter a news room/studio, can handle the pressure of a deadline, and most importantly I can handle any issues that are thrown my way during a live broadcast.

     

  • Shooting and Editing Video
    When being a multimedia journalist, it is important to have the skill of shooting and editing your own video. I am very responsible and understand the meaning of a deadline, am consistently able to gather the appropriate interviews that are needed for my news packages, and can edit them quickly and efficiently.  I have  also obtained this skillset over the last couple of years and am consistently improving with each video news package I film.

     

  • News Writing
    I am very knowledgeable at writing news copy. I have taken several classes where I have learned the proper techniques at putting together a news story. I understand how to phonetically spell words to assist in my pronunciation, the correct way to write leads for news stories, and how to attribute sources. I have gained this experience through working with News Central 34 over the last couple of years.

     

  • Producing
    I understand that being a producer involves alot of pre-production. I have been the co-producer for two shows where I have organized interviews, written my own script as well as others, and made sure everyone was on task. I am currently a line/associate producer for News Central 34 where I create the rundowns, give everyone a direction that they need to take, make all the final decisions when it comes to the newscast, and most importantly...make sure everything is completed in time for the live broadcast at 5p.m.

     

  • Interviewing
    Interviewing is a key aspect if wanting to pursue a career as a broadcaster. I have learned to master this skill throughout my years at Central Michigan University from numerous classes where I had to go create a news package, News Central 34 where I am a producer and have been a reporter, and several extra curricular activities I am involved in as well. I understand the proper techniques that are needed when planning an interview, how to ask questions in a way that your interviewee feels comfortable, and techniques on how to get the answers to difficult questions.

     

  • Sony NX5 Video Cameras
    Operating these cameras are one of the many skills I have. Throughout my time at Central Michigan University, these are the only video cameras I have had the opportunity to get my hands on to do all of my reporting work. I have a firm understanding of how all of the functions operate.

     

  • Verbal Communication
    With communication being my minor, I have an excellent understanding with how to interact with individuals. My friends and family all label me as a "people person" because I am able to spark up a conversation with anybody. I am great at public speaking because I have no issue adapting to the environments I am in. I also recognize that communication whether it be verbal, non-verbal, interpersonal, etc. is a major piece of what broadcasting entails and I definitely have those qualities.

     

  • Adobe Premiere Pro
    The only editing software program I am familiar with at this time is Adobe Premiere Pro. I have edited every video package on this program so I am quite familiar with how the basic funtions operate. I am a quick learner and it does not take me long to understand how editing programs work.

     

  • Adobe Audition
    I have worked on several projects using Adobe Audition so I am familiar with the basic operations of this program. I understand that this program is essentially for radio projects and strictly for audio purposes only.

     

  • Dependability
    Any given task or job I am assigned, I will always get it completed in a timely manner. I am very responsible and as I have already mentioned several times, I understand the concept of deadlines. I have learned that by being dependable people gain trust in you and want to repeatedly work with you on numerous projects.
